I know a number of people are wondering what's gone on with Hot Stove and where Keith is.
To be honest, I don't know exactly what's going on with Keith or why he hasn't responded to any emails or messages for well over a month now. I hope he and his family are okay and that his unresponsiveness is just circumstantial.
Here's what I do know:
Keith has been replaced in multiple leagues. One baseball and my NBA dynasty league because he never responded to emails or showed up for the check-ins. This is obviously concerning and highly unlike him.
However, he's also in my dynasty NFL league and was picking up players and setting roster each week all the way up to the final week of the regular season (Dec 16). He was adding free agents with enough frequency that I would consider him an active member of the league.
With this in mind, I felt it was best to wait and see if he showed up for Hot Stove late.
Unfortunately, we've already missed the first checkpoint, which was Jan 2. This was the day he officially posted the league check-in for managers last year. The next checkpoint to watch is January 30th or so, which was when Yahoo opened fantasy baseball leagues.
We started the Hot Stove offseason a few days later.
I'm still holding out hope that Keith will be back before Feb 1, but I'm admittedly less hopeful than I was just a week ago.
A few years ago, there was a situation where Keith lost internet access for a period of time and was checking things on his wife's phone, if I recall correctly. It's possible that something along these lines may have happened, which would explain him setting lineups in my NFL league but not actually checking emails or responding to messages. This is, of course, just speculation on my part.
A few of us have at least pondered what we would do if Keith doesn't return.
We could attempt to keep the league going and split up the workload that comes with managing the league.
However, Keith is the soul of Hot Stove and not having him back would be a pretty big loss, to say the least.
Keith and I both worked to develop the Google Sheets structure of Hot Stove and my NBA league, so I could always recreate it on a new Pro Boards account. I know Tom and Derrick would be willing to help manage the league and I'm sure we could figure it out to some degree if there was wide support for continuing the league without Keith.
At a minimum, we would have to replace two managers (Keith and Rick). Any more than that and we would be replacing a decent segment of the league before even picking up where we left off.
I don't know how all of this will play out, but I think it's the right time for us to at least discuss what we should do with the league in case Keith really doesn't return. We have just over three weeks left before the typical HS offseason would begin.
